Florine Stettheimer, a painter, poet, and designer, was an active participant in New York's early modern art community. Her paintings, composed like stage scenes, are dreamy and lighthearted, her preferred subject matter including her family and friends and narratives taken from turn-of-the-century society. As a painter, Stettheimer was mostly overlooked during her lifetime; she was more widely known for her costume and set designs. However, in 1946 (at the urging of her friend Marcel Duchamp), the MoMA mounted a well-received posthumous retrospective of her work.
