Biography

Francesca Gabbiani’s intricate cut-paper collages depict moments frozen in time and space. Her creations have been called “elaborate entrances into other worlds” by Ed Ruscha, the artist’s father-and-law and an early influence on her work. To create these pieces, she makes computer drawings that she uses as a guide to cut the pieces of colored paper that she layers together. Her eerily still interior spaces call to mind classic horror films from the likes of Dario Argento and Stanley Kubrick, though devoid of any actors her scenes have an added tension. Likewise, empty black “mirrors” framed by Rococo assemblages of magic mushrooms and other psychedelic flora offer no reflections, serving as portraits of the viewer instead.
