Francis Hewitt
American, 1936-1992

Approaching artmaking like a theoretician solving a puzzle, Francis Hewitt produced optically complex paintings and drawings through which he analyzed and explored the nature of perception. Together with Ernst Benkert and Edward Mieczkowski, Hewitt formed the Anonima Group (1960-71), becoming one of the leading practitioners of Op art. His master’s research into the psychology of perception provided the conceptual framework for the Group’s investigations. Hewitt’s works tease the eye with vibrant, vibrating shapes, colors, and lines that seem to do everything but stand still.
