Francois Ilnseher was born in Biel, Switzerland, and began his formal education in visual arts under the tutelage of Diane Lidchi in Johannesburg, South Africa. After he moved to New York, he continued his education at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Student League. Ilnseher has worked with a variety of media, but his special interest is in photography and collage. “I am intentionally avoiding historical, traditional values and past personal experiences, relying solely on my imagination at the moment of being seduced by the opportunity, the materials and the empty surface, to create a wholly new visual entity,” he says. Ilnseher has collaborated professionally with such celebrated photographers as Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn, and Richard Avedon, all of whom continue to influence his practice.
