Gabriel Orozco
Mexican, b. 1962
Gabriel Orozco’s diverse practice—which includes sculpture, photography, painting, and video—often embraces complex geometries, familiar materials, and an element of whimsy or chance. In Home Run (1993), for example, Orozco installed oranges in the windows of apartments and offices across the street from the Museum of Modern Art. His Toilet Ventilator (1997) is an installation that features a ceiling fan with rolls of toilet paper attached to the blades; as the fan turns, the paper unravels. Orozco has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions including the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Serpentine Galleries, Tate Modern, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, among others. He has participated in the Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Bienal, and Documenta, and his work has sold for six figures at auction.
