Appropriating cultural icons such as Frida Kahlo, Che Guevara, Tintin, and Batman, Gabriel Ortega produces acrylic paintings and mixed media works that explore his inner child. By creating worlds in which these divergent figures collide with one another in different narratives, Ortega cleverly comments on society, politics, and religion in a way that is both poignant and humorous. In some works he juxtaposes political figures with the Belgian character Tintin, raising questions about the loss of innocence and the battle between good and evil.
