Through his juxtapositions of natural and manmade materials, Gabriel Rico comments on the relationship between humans and the natural world. His sculptures and installations have been internationally exhibited, and he was included at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. Rico uses arrows, X/Y matrices, and other mathematical symbols to create visual comparisons between disparate objects to place his viewer in a state of immediate confusion. Rico’s aesthetic systems suggest an inner logic, although he leaves his work open to interpretation. His irreverent use of scavenged branches, found tennis balls, ceramic fragments, and other objects ties his art to the legacy of Arte Povera, while his taxidermy sculptures suggest analogies to Joseph Beuys.
