Garth Evans makes work that has been described as biomorphic abstraction, which is in accord with how he approaches work. “I don’t make a huge distinction between what is man-made and [what is] nature,” he says. “In some ways, we take on responsibility for what has been done in the natural world.” This reference to the natural world unites a widely varied body of work, which includes both sculpture and drawings in styles that range from planar and geometric, to rounded and organic. He is known for his ability to manipulate common materials, like tape, cardboard, and fiberglass, to resemble stone, bronze, or porphyry.
