Biography

In their gestural brushwork, material texture, and colorful subject matter, Geoff Hippenstiel’s paintings evoke the work of Abstract Expressionists such as Willem de Kooning and Barnett Newman. His use of impasto, a thick layering of pigment with a knife or brush on the canvas, as though it were a palette, illustrates his interest in and commitment to the physical presence of paint. Although he shares his modernist predecessors’ concern with this materiality, Hippenstiel punctuates many of his works with spray enamel, a departure from their approach.
