To create his compositions, Gerald Slota mutilates photographs, scrawling, piercing, tearing, cutting, burning, and collaging. His work spans the analog/digital divide—as in the artist’s photographs of the pages of his journal, with feature photographs, contact sheets, drawings, and masking tape. Slota has collaborated with writer Neil LaBute on a series of “strange greeting cards”, creating eerie images to go with a series of dark lines by the writer. In these, as in the artist’s other work, the viewer is presented with a bizarre world that offers imagined secret histories and subliminal narratives.
