Glynnis McDaris
American, born 1979

Glynnis McDaris finds water “interesting in its relationship to the molecular, cells, cleansing, sexuality, life force, and its constant earthly presence whether as dew, sweat, or rain.” As such, it is often the subject of her semi-abstract black-and-white photographs and videos. Her 2012 exhibition “In time and with water” juxtaposed these fluid, water-based images with sculptural works of contrived forms with wooden architectural details. The resulting contrast between permanence and ephemerality, and interplay between movement and stillness, lent the exhibition an emotional charge. For example, a lattice detail that recurs throughout the photographs and drawings, often obscured or in a state of deterioration, was meant to reference natural order, decay, and temporality.
