Guillermo Muñoz Vera
Chilean, b. 1956
Internationally recognized as a major figure in realist painting, Guillermo Muñoz Vera brings technical prowess and precision to a wide range of subjects, including landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes, and scenes of political and sexual violence. Influenced by a long tradition of Spanish painters including Diego Velázquez, Muñoz Vera’s elegant still lifes are marked by subtle plays of light and shadow, while other works depict historical scenes based on the discovery of the New World: explorers’ ships at sea, displays of scientific and cartographic objects that reflect the scientific underpinnings of early modern European exploration, and monks and friars spreading the Christian faith that provided the ideological framework for colonialism.
