Guy Rusha
English, born 1983

Guy Rusha paints minimalist portraits of women that engage with and question the art historical traditions of female portraiture. In his compositions—outlines of faces, eyes, noses, lips, and hair—on monochromatic backgrounds, he applies oil paint to achieve a variety of textures, from intense impasto to sparse mark making. Rusha’s interest is in probing and subverting the convention of the male artist painting the female subject: his 2011 exhibition “Her” (2011) exemplified this preoccupation, its heavily abstracted depictions of barely recognizable women bearing titles like “Hi Baby,” “Hand on Thigh,” or “With You I Will Leave”.
