Hans Stoltenberg Lerche

Biography

Born in Düsseldorf, probably the son of Norwegian painter Vincent Stoltenberg Lerche, Hans Stoltenberg Lerche worked in a small ceramics factory in Germany before traveling to Florence in 1886. He later moved to Paris, where he studied painting with Eugène Carrière. He began modeling small sculptures in various materials including ceramics, gold, silver, bronze, and glass, which he exhibited at international expositions—beginning in Paris in 1900—and in Salons of Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1901 to 1912. Although he moved to Rome in 1900, he maintained a residence in Paris. Because he signed his work “H. St. Lerche,” his name has often been misidentified as Saint Lerche. [Source: Jason Jacques]
