Harry Dodge rose to prominence in the early 1990s for the founding and programming of the Bearded Lady, a pioneering performance space for San Francisco’s queer literary and arts scene. Dodge’s artistic practice is dedicated to exploring what escapes categorization—what he calls a pursuit of the “in-between.” The artist became known for his video works, which he began to produce prolifically starting in the late 1990s; in 2001, Dodge began his infamous, ongoing film collaboration with Stanya Kahn. The films are characterized by their intricately edited shots, layered audio tracks, and the intimate performances they capture. Dodge also makes drawings featuring cartoony figures that enact their plights and comedies with dark, lewd humor; his sculptures are equally playful in their unlikely unions of common objects.
