Hata Shunsai

Born in 1976, Hata Shunsai III is a metalware artist whose family has been rooted in Kanaya-machi for generations. Steeped in history, Kanaya-machi is a district in Takaoka, a city in the Toyama perfecture of Japan. This area of Japan has been well known for centuries for its exceptional metalware craft.
To this day, some of the best metalware artists, including Living National Treasures are from this area. Hata has carried on the family tradition of creating beautiful tea kettles by learning through watching his father as a young boy. In the past few years, he has started to challenge himself a bit by stepping away from traditional designs, and experimenting with more modern and artistic pieces. His work at various exhibitions and he has received several prestigious awards in Japan.
