Through a combination of sculpture, painting, video, and performance, Hayley A. Silverman creates surreal environments in a wide range of scales. One sculpture series consists of small ceramic bowls containing the polyurethane foods familiar to restaurant window displays, but with the additional elements of tiny humans and animal figures. Silverman gave these soupy habitats benevolent-sounding titles such as Hospitality (2015), Patience (2014), and Mercy (2014). The works defy our expectations of what is real and question cultural archetypes of morality. In the series “Crude Currencies Singular” (2015), Silverman sealed international coins in resin along with food, metal, and other resources. By combining what she calls “coin currencies” and “energy currencies,” Silverman investigates the nature of value.
