U.A.E.-based Hazem Mahdy explores various belief systems and his identity as an Egyptian emigrant in staged and manipulated photographic prints. For one series of photographs, Mahdy projected recognizably Egyptian patterns onto his body in order to question his relationship to his native country. “There was an identity crisis in my earlier work,” he has said. More recently he has drawn on wide-ranging influences—including Buddhism, Islamic mysticism, Greek mythology, carbon atoms, and fractals—photographing and digitally mirroring numerous repeated images of his own arms, and turning them into abstract kaleidoscopic patterns redolent of Islamic motifs and molecular forms.
