Heidi Preuss Grew says that she makes her works “to reveal the vulnerable and pathetic side of the human condition as well as the heroic and beautiful.” She is best known for her glazed ceramic sculptures of anthropomorphic and fantastical figures. These are often based loosely on friends and members of her community, as well as prominent historical or fictional personalities. She alters her choice of clay based on the personality of the subject she wants to depict, using porcelain for the sensual, for example, and stoneware for the crass. Preuss Grew concentrates on the interaction between personalities in her works, which often take the form of multipart vignettes. Her body of work also includes wall-mounted, painted porcelain slabs.
