Henrik Aarrestad Uldalen
Norwegian, b. 1986
The figurative portraits of Henrik Aarrestad Uldalen frequently portray his subjects in dreamlike states, floating listlessly in unclear settings. The faces of Uldalen’s subjects appear to dissipate into flurries of textured brushstrokes. Uldalen’s style is rooted in Neoclassicism, with an expressive, modern twist that draws inspiration from the cinematography of films by David Lynch and Charlie Kaufman. Uldalen was adopted as an infant from South Korea to Norway, and his work is rooted in deep-seated feelings of displacement, isolation, and loneliness from his childhood. Over the past two years, he has accrued a large following of international fans and collectors on social media. He has held solo exhibitions in the U.K., Denmark, Norway, and the U.S., and is a co-founder of the popular Instagram page PAINTGUIDE, a forum for contemporary artists.
