Henry J. Simonds
American, born 1975

An avid collector of items like matchbooks and rubber bands, Henry J. Simonds has an infectious fascination with the creativity that goes into making the most mundane objects. He delves deeply into the details of these objects, researching their invention, production, and use, and celebrating their form and beauty in photographs, videos, sculptures, and wall pieces. Simonds is especially fond of Super Balls©: he created an entire body of work in celebration of these rubber balls, for which he invented a taxonomic system. Through lush photographs of individual balls and framed displays in which he mounts them under glass like exotic butterflies, Simonds conveys his appreciation of these humble toys. For him, his work would be successful if “all of a sudden there was a resurgence in the appreciation and play of Super Balls© […].”
