Holli Schorno
American, born 1964

Extracted from geology textbooks, topographical maps, and home improvement manuals, Holli Schorno’s intricate paper cutouts form surrealistic landscapes in which machines come to life and houses sprout wings. Absurd though some of the juxtapositions may seem, careful examination reveals that each piece represents a fragment of an actual place or thing. Ranging from sketchbook-sized to large-scale, the landscapes are characterized by vast expanses of blank white paper, serving as sky and foreground. Intrigued by the impact of technology and machines on human experience, Schorno infuses her collages with evocations of communication satellites, broadcast equipment, radio astronomy, and tiny diagrams of geological processes.
