Biography

Book covers and antique papers serve as both canvas and medium for Hope Kroll’s 3-D collages, which tell visual narratives rooted in psychology, emotions, and spirituality. Culling imagery from vintage encyclopedias, medical books, technical manuals, children’s books, and antique photographs, the artist builds scenes with melancholic, sinister undertones. A self-described perfectionist, Kroll perpetually seeks to build larger, more intricate scenes with more and more elements. By raising individual cutouts as much as 1 1/2 inches off the collage’s base, she imbues her works with sense of dynamism and visual complexity, simultaneously paying artistic homage to Leonardo da Vinci’s artist-inventor duality, Joseph Cornell’s dioramas, and Frida Kahlo’s surreal imagery.
