Humans Since 1982

Humans since 1982 uses everyday objects to create sculptural and experiential installations. The artistic studio was founded in 2009 by Bastian Bischoff and Per Emanuelsson, who met as postgraduate students at HDK Göteborg. Together, they co-own the Stockholm-based studio with engineer David Cox; the studio also includes additional members of their interdisciplinary team. Their series “A million Times” (2013–present) presents clocks as artistic objects instead of pragmatic devices. The works include dozens of miniature clocks whose hands display the time by the minute in a digital format. Between those minute intervals, the clock’s hands are programmed to perform abstract, dance-like choreographies. The studio’s 2018 commission A million Times at Changi for Changi Airport in Singapore is one of the largest kinetic sculptures in the world. Another series, “Collection of Motion” (2018–present), presents a series of looped videos, such as a waterfall flowing across different screens, and portrays motion as if it were an object to be collected and cherished.
