Acclaimed Brooklyn-based painter Jackie Gendel is known for colorful and evocative works that entice with the suggestion of narratives that dissolve and ultimately evade the viewer. Gendel received her MFA from Yale in 1998 and has since been recognized for her deep understanding of art history, revealed through unabashed references to a wide range of artistic movements, from Pop to Expressionism to Fauvism. Fluidly moving between these styles, Gendel favors female subjects in her works, which are couched in ambivalence and, often, humor. The American Academy of Arts and Letters granted Gendel an Academy Award for Art in 2007. She is an associate professor of painting at the Rhode Island School of Design.
