Inspired by the Land Art movement of the 1970s, sculptor and engineer James Capper creates monumental, human-operated machines that can walk across the earth. Mimicking the movements of insects, amphibians, and industrial cranes, these sculptures imprint the ground with each step, a performative practice that the artist refers to as “earth-marking.” For example, Capper’s four-legged vehicle Mountaineer, which the British artist hopes to develop in three sizes, will be able to transport a person as it climbs uphill, while driving its large-scale, steel-welded teeth into the earth to create abstract patterns in the soil.
