There’s something sinister about photographer James Ostrer’s candy-coated images. The artist uses his medium to explore the limits of contemporary body politics, desire, and consumption, such as in his series “Wotsit All About.” For this work, he created sickly sweet Leigh Bowery–like masks from sugary candy to investigate the contemporary appetite for excess, and to propose an iconography for a new tribe of human beings divorced from nature. He has approached the relationship to the body in different ways, such as in a series of self-portraits for which the artist hired prostitutes to direct him.
