Jane Irish combines her passion for rococo and Gilded Age art and design with an attempt to reconcile the fraught socioeconomic systems that enabled the proliferation of these styles during the 18th and 19th centuries. Drawing on anachronistic painted china designs and working with egg tempera, Irish recreates the lush interiors of noble residences, particularly those in France. With her impressionistic painting style, she creates alluring scenes of beauty, which are laced with moments of violence that disrupt the aesthetic pleasure of the composition and underscore the link between art and monarchies and imperialism. “The overall intent of my work is to develop a visual myth about the build up and aftermath of war,” the Philadelphia-based artist has said.
