Jane South

Inherently architectural, Jane South builds objects that move effortlessly between drawing and sculpture, two- and three- dimensions. Using predominantly paper, South cuts and folds, paints and glues to create ambiguous forms that are constantly in flux between the weighty building materials they often appear to be and the reality of their ephemeral construction. She is heavily influenced by the architecture that surrounds her studio in Brooklyn: an amalgam of 19th century industrial buildings and overlaying infrastructure of new technologies. The resulting sculptures echo this, as complex arrangements or installations with many disparate pieces, jointed and hinged together or merely stacked to give the impression of being trapped in a transient state.
