Janet Malcolm, known elsewhere as a prominent writer and critic for the New Yorker, credits David Salle for the start of her career as an artist; Malcolm had mischievously brought Salle some collages she had made as a joke, but their talk spurred her to pursue the practice as an art form. Malcolm’s writing background informs the prominence of text in her collages, which feature a variety of printed matter ranging from her own family archives to used books. She pays tribute to her Dadaist and Constructivist influences through direct references, most obviously in the case of Homage to Malevich (2003), and Lieber Pepik (2001), which includes a line of text from Kurt Schwitters.
