Jason Hanasik
American, born 1981

Jason Hanasik uses his photography and video works as means to question Western conceptions of masculinity, queer culture, class, and heroism. His best known works that feature military men as their subjects—frequently people with whom Hanasik has a personal relationship. These portraits highlight the soldiers’ emotional vulnerability in the expectation of violence, and explore the boundaries within their identities as soldier and civilian, masculine and feminine. He describes the aim of his work as to alter social expectations of masculinity and to include its alternatives. “The men in these images and I […] all have a complicated relationship to what is considered normal,” Hanasik says.
