Biography

Jason Horowitz’s large-scale, provocative, and tightly cropped photographs on archival pigment print effectively disrupt the relationship between figure and landscape. Bodies, seen close-up, begin to resemble porous terrain, at times even suggesting abstract forms and patterns, and opening the spectator to new ways of visualizing the human body. He has photographed drag queens, body parts, and cuts of meat, among other subjects. Often employing the glamor lighting that is typically used in fashion photography and advertising, he manipulates the signifiers of the ideal body—addressing biases about beauty, ugliness, body image, race, sexuality, and aging that are latent in the way the body is typically represented.
