Transgressing the boundaries of artistic convention and political correctness, Jason Rhoades made conceptual art that explored religion, consumerism, language, and art itself. His installations were room-sized, interactive assemblages of objects and neon lights, as well as multimedia embellishments that highlighted the artist’s process-oriented method. For his best-known and final installation, Black Pussy Soirée Cabaret Macramé (2006), Rhoades arranged piles of fabric, aluminum bookshelves, and Native American dream catchers beneath hanging neon lights spelling out euphemisms for female genitalia, which Rhoades had researched for many years and included in previous installations.
