Jayashree Chakravarty
Indian, b. 1956
Jayashree Chakravarty’s autobiographical and surreal works explore concepts such as nature, harmony, and truth. Influenced by the transformation of the lush jungles of her childhood home into concrete townships, works such as Scattered foliage (2020) reflect the discordant relationship between humans and nature. She uses natural materials, tissue, rice paper, cellophane, and paper to create images of overlapping forms reminiscent of cave paintings. Chakravarty, who received her BA in Fine Arts from the Visva Bharati University, is the recipient of numerous awards including the Gujarat Lalit Kala Akademi Award, the Second Bharat Bhavan Biennale Award, and the Bombay Art Society Award, Mumbai. Her work is in the collections of the Chandigarh Museum and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
