Jean Bourdichon
French, 1457-1512

As official court painter to four successive French Kings, Jean Bourdichon created coins, stained glass windows, paintings, and manuscript illuminations, typically representing either religious themes or royal portraiture. Only one of Bourdichon’s paintings is known to survive, and his remaining body of work is almost exclusively manuscript illustration, an area in which he particularly excelled. Bourdichon is thought to have apprenticed under the previous court painter, Jean Fouquet, learning from him the artistic advances of the Italian Renaissance.
