Jean Wolff
American, b. 1960
Born in Detroit, Michigan, she studied Fine Arts at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit and at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, receiving a BFA in Studio Arts. She then attended Hunter College, CUNY in New York, graduating with an MFA in painting and printmaking.
Initially trained as a printmaker, Jean Wolff is interested in the creation of subtle order through the use of strong patterns and grids in a variety of mediums. She explores grid and geometry primarily in painting, but also including paper, canvas, and wood. She is currently working with small wooden dowels organized in a grid- like pattern with some irregular inserts mounted to wooden panel, and then covered in brightly colored enamel paint. Her work carries on from the great minimalist traditions of artists, such as Robert Ryman and Agnes Martin.
Jean Wolff has had group and solo exhibitions in galleries in New York City and internationally. In addition, she has published 108 works in 69 issues of 47 different magazines. She is now part of the artistic community of Westbeth in New York City.
