Jeffrey Ripple paints still lifes of solitary flowers in individual glass vases, often taking as long as three months to complete a single flower in oil. “I think that they just begin with something that is in me, as I’m fascinated with botanical stuff—flowers, fruit, growing things—and I think that my paintings, are, in a way, an expression of my interest in those things,” he has said. Ripple brings out each flower’s individual character, more interested in rhythm and placement in his compositions than achieving realism.
