Jennifer Li creates surreal and psychologically charged portraits of people within spare domestic spaces, drawing from still lifes of the Dutch Golden Age, with their reflective and symbolic subjects. She intends to create work that is “straightforwardly beautiful with an element of the weird,” as she has said. In her rapturous oil painting Pandora’s Box, the mythical heroine is presented as an adolescent girl dressed in Grecian robes. In her hands she grasps a golden box, holding it open in a stylized gesture.
