Jens Fänge
Swedish, b. 1965
Jens Fänge’s surrealistic compositions combine elements from diverse genres of painting to create collage-like constructions. His work has been widely exhibited at galleries and museums in his native Sweden and internationally, and he was appointed a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 2017. In his paintings, Fänge crafts dreamlike architectural spaces using an illogical arrangement of doorways, corridors, and flat swatches of color and pattern to form shifting perspectives reminiscent of Giorgio de Chirico’s metaphysical canvases. Incorporating overlapping layers of fabric, vinyl, paintings within paintings, and cut-out faces and figures, Fänge’s works are as much assemblages of materials as they are of different painting styles. He draws from genres including portraiture, landscape, still life, and geometric abstraction to create composite scenes that unfold like Russian dolls.
