Biography

British painter Jeremy Duncan captures the urban environment with his own brand of what he calls “abstract realism.” Finding inspiration in the world around him, he crafts images by carefully composing and selecting elements in order to represent the environment, rather than breaking these elements down, as is common in more traditional abstract traditions. His New York cityscapes include building facades featured head-on in a matter-of-fact style. These anonymous storefronts and apartment buildings are crisscrossed with dramatically cast shadows and sunlight streaming through fire escapes. Duncan captures the dense metropolis as a series of still moments of light and architecture, all of it nearly void of the human figure.
