Jessica Campbell
Canadian-American, b. 1985
Jessica Campbell is a Canadian artist based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, whose bright textile works and satirical comics clearly showcase her skill as a humorist. Her carpeted pieces are vivid and tactile; a tantalizing mix of texture and color. Campbell’s works refer to relatable, everyday scenes that seem to be pulled right out of her memory, as exemplified by the acrylic rug on panel titled “A Beautiful Woman Eating a Spinach and Artichoke Dip Quesadilla.” She interprets subjects very literally while preserving the humor of the scenes through her quip candor. Campbell’s carpeted works are constructed using commercial carpeting that is collaged into various pictorial narratives. While some of these images portray seemingly mundane still lives, much of Jessica Campbell’s art calls into question larger cultural conversations including sexual harassment, gender norms, and debunking high society.
