Swedish-born photographer JH Engström uses his medium to represent the challenge of human existence, all the while questioning his camera's adequacy to handle such an undertaking. Known for his perfectly imperfect technique, Engström includes dust and visible borders to emphasize that his images are merely an interpretation of what truly exists. Engström began in Paris as apprentice to Mario Testino before moving to Stockholm to assist Anders Peterson, the latter position establishing a lifelong collaborative friendship. Engström graduated from the photo and film department of Gothenburg University, and in the same year released “Shelter”, an empirical portrait series of homeless women in Stockholm, followed by a trilogy of self-portrait series' and most recently, a book of photographs of Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport, which is filled with deserted, smoke-tinted prints …
