Jill Nathanson
American
Cloudy washes of color overlap in the luminous color field abstractions of painter Jill Nathanson, sparking an energetic balance between carefully selected neighboring colors. An MFA graduate of Hunter College, Nathanson also studied at Bennington College in the 1970s where she met and was inspired by visiting artists including Kenneth Noland and Larry Poons. Nathanson has frequently exhibited her paintings in solo gallery shows in New York City; her paintings are also held by the Telfair Museum, the Sheldon Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. She creates preparatory sketches for her compositions by collaging cut pieces of transparent colored plastic gels; this translucence is recreated in large paintings such as Light Yield (2016), which resembles a minimalist work of stained glass. Nathanson works on the floor, pouring paint into taped-off areas one at a time and patiently waiting for each layer to dry before adding the next.
