Biography

Jim Budde is a ceramist whose wares are vehicles for humorous and satirical political commentary, and who regards his works as the future souvenirs of contemporary politics. The most well-known of these are his series of teapots, through which he lampoons famous American politicians—like Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Barack Obama—by exaggerating their features. Though Budde’s ceramics take a variety of forms, including standing sculptures and wall-reliefs, he confesses that he “always fall[s] back on these teapots that are based on that Mesoamerican or Pre-Columbian pottery that combine human and animal forms.” Other motifs in his works include popular cartoons and allusions to classical literature or art history.
