American ceramist Joan Lurie creates architectural porcelain sculptures that are inspired by organic forms. Harnessing the shared space between the natural and the synthetic, Lurie states, “my work mixes the hidden worlds of microscopic views with a fascination for cellular structures in modernist architecture.” In a process that is somewhat akin to paper mâché, she begins with a basic shape and then coils paper clay bands around the outside of the sculpture, cutting away parts of the original porcelain form. During this process, she often allows the materials to “find their own structure,” as she has said.
