João Ó
born 1977

Trained as an architect, João Ó produces installations and large-scale photographic works that explore the built environment. Devoid of human subjects, his photographs capture interior public spaces in East Asia, artificially lit and framed according to shape and line. His stark images are often precisely symmetrical and depict structures, machinery, or thresholds, informed by the artist’s dual Portuguese-Chinese identity and suggestive of science fiction. In his installation, Rainbow Bridge (2010), brightly colored bars of light are strung together to form a bridge between two walls, a border that connects separate locations or identities.
