Biography

John Fincher’s realist paintings and monotypes celebrate the natural and cultural landscapes of the American West, depicting its trees, deserts, and vibrant natural light in tightly cropped, sensual, and balanced compositions. Drawing from art historical references—from German Expressionism to Chinese landscape painting to American Pop Art—as well as personal experience, Fincher paints close-up views of poplar trees, cacti, prickly pears, fences, and other imagery common to the American West, portraying them in vivid, contrasting color and cast in dramatic shadow. He seeks to “discover nature’s truth and give life to a painted image by understanding the rhythms and pulses behind appearances,” as he describes. Fincher has also painted serially repeated images of everyday objects, such as shaving brushes.
