Biography

With his November 1890 solo exhibition at the St. Botolph Club, John Leslie Breck introduced Boston to the new painting style known as Impressionism. One of the first Americans to make Impressionist paintings, Breck was among the first group of Americans (along with Willard L. Metcalf and Theodore Robinson) to travel to Giverny, the heart of Impressionism, in 1887. His pioneering style, revealed in his colorful scenes from throughout Europe, earned him the title "the father of American impressionism."
