Sculptor and writer John Powers draws inspiration from science fiction and the legacies of the Minimalist avant-garde to construct installations and sculptural works that explore repetition, construction, and the tension between man and machine. Empire (2008), a large-scale orb comprised of aluminum-plated polystyrene elements, evokes the Star Wars Death Star. Powers created the work through a combination of mass production and his own hand, a hybrid method through which he strives toward a space between the cold remove and mechanization of the Minimalists and the emotional presence of the Abstract Expressionists. In Powers’ exhibition “Suite of Suites” (2012), a set of overgrown furniture-like elements treaded a line between sculpture and functional object, and between public and private spheres.
