John Riepenhoff

American, born 1982

Biography

A co-founder of Milwaukee’s Green Gallery, John Riepenhoff creates sculpture and painting that expresses the artist’s interest in building connections, both with art historical precedents, and with a community of artists across the United States and around the world. “I try to ask questions about where value in art comes from and try to make the art function for the people involved in that system,” he says. Riepenhoff’s work often includes elements of humor, as in his collaborative pop-up comedy club, Club Nutz, with Scott and Tyson Reeder. He also pays homage to other artists, creating renditions of their work or recreating his own, in order to raise questions about the influence of community and collaboration on the work of an artist.
